Hi Darlings, in today’s post I’m going to talk about Microneedling At Home, the complete guide with all the benefits, before and after photos.
I’m going to tell you everything you need to know about this treatment:
- 1- What it is?
- 2- What it does?
- 3- What do you need?
- 4- Is it painful?
- 5- And most important: does sticking needles in your face actually work?
We have a lot to cover and I hope I remember everything but in case you have more questions feel free to leave a comment.
A little disclaimer before we start: I’m not a dermatologist so don’t take my word for granted, if you have any concerns please talk to your doctor first. I’m only going to share what I did and what worked for me.
What is Microneedling & What it does?
Microneedling is a skincare treatment that you do using a dermaroller, where essentially you roll tiny needles on your face.
The little needles create tiny injuries that are not visible (you won’t bleed) but it tricks the body so it boost collagen production and the skin repair itself.
That kind of scientific explanation essentially means that collagen will help your skin recover from acne scars and stretch marks, but it will also help with wrinkles and hair growth and overall skin texture.
This used to be a treatment that you could get done by professionals but it is way more expensive. If you decide to do it at home it will be less effective, in the sense that you will need more time to see results (I will explain why in a second) but also cheaper, we are talking 200$ vs 30$.
microneedling at home: What do you need?
Dermaroller
You will need a Dermaroller, you can find them easily on Amazon, here’s mine.
Now about the needles: the smallest ones are 0.25mm those are for more sensitive areas like around the eyes.
The one I have is 0.5mm which is the highest length you can use at home on the face, if you want to go higher you’ll have to see a doctor that will use longer needles but he will also have to use an anesthetic cream because it would get too painful but of course that is more effective so you’ll have to decide if you want faster results or to save money.

Longer needles, 0.7mm to 1mm can be used at home but on different parts of the body, like on stretch marks.
Serum
Almost as important is the serum that you use afterwards, it will help the skin replenish itself and boost the effect of the dermaroller. The serum you chose my change depending on the skin concerns (if you want to treat wrinkles you are going to use an anti aging serum and so on).
Before the serum I like to use a Glycolic Acid toner, I created skin care guide a while ago if you want to learn more about Skincare Acids, in simple terms glycolic acid has the same benefits as the dermaroller on acne scars, pores and wrinkles.
If you saw my Fall Favourites {2018} both of these products won’t be a surprise.
The toner I use is the Pixi Glow Tonic and for a serum, I use The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, which is super hydrating and not greasy.
After using the dermaroller your skin is more sensitive but also more receptive and it will allow the serum to penetrate more deeply and help the skin repair itself.
microneedling at home: How To Do It
This is how I personally use it to treat my acne scars.
- Start: 15th of October
- How Often: 5 times per week, I usually don’t do it on Wednesdays and on Sundays but that can change depending on my schedule.
- For How Long: 4 Minutes, the whole treatment from start to finish lasts about 10-15 minutes.
- What do I do:
- I take off my makeup/wash my face if I’m not wearing anything.
- On clean skin, I run the dermaroller on my cheeks, chin and forehead for 4 minutes. I usually run it in each area for about a minute in both directions: vertical and horizontal.
- After the timer goes off I put the toner and the serum. Your skin might be red right after, mine usually calms down after 10 minutes.
Important
- After you are done you have to run the dermaroller under hot water and spray some rubbing alcohol over it, one the alcohol is evaporated you can close it and put it away.
YOU HAVE TO DISINFECT YOUR DERMAROLLER AFTER EVERY USE!
- Do not use it over open injuries and on fresh blemishes. You don’t want to spread bacteria all over your face.
- Use it at night, the skin needs to recover afterwards you don’t want to put make up over it.
- Replace your dermaroller after 3-4 months, the needles lose their sharpness and you don’t want to hurt yourself.
- Use a sunscreen, ALWAYS, especially when you are doing such aggressive treatments and if you are using acids.
microneedling at home My Experience
Is It Painful?
I know this is the question everyone is thinking, running needles on your face it’s quite scary, I know I was terrified the first time I did it.
But NO it’s not painful and it gets better with time. I’d say a 3/10 on a pain scale. You will feel it but it is absolutely bearable.
Does It ACTUALLY Work?
I had some pretty heavy acne scarring on my face and I’ve been using it for about a month so I know it will take longer to see more results.
Either way, this is my skin before and after:
I think is working for me, I see a difference in my skin texture: my skin is SMOOTHER and PLUMPER. Some of the scars have faded but it takes time.
That being said I think I will keep using it but maybe add a different serum to the routine, something that will actually lighten up the scars. I’m either thinking the Kiehls Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution or Clinique Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector & Optimizer but we’ll see about that.
If have any other question let me know, but now is your turn: did you know about microneedling? Will you try it for yourself? Leave a comment with your thoughts.

I have never heard of that, but it looks SO effective!!!!!! I just started taking collagen vitamins but this would be a good way to boost collagen too!
It would be such a good combo, you are going to be a collagene queen ??
This is so interesting! I’ve heard of dermarolling but never looked into it, so thanks for this guide! Tempted to try it, and I hope it continues to improve your skin.
I hope you do! It’s a really good treatment ??
This was so interesting! I have been wondering about this process. I appreciate all the information and the pictures. It looks like a great process.
Thank you so much for reading! I hope you’ll try it
Thanks for sharing the before and after photos! The difference is definitely noticeable–are there any other products you changed during that time period or would you say it’s all attributable to the micro-needling?
It’s all the micro-needling! Thank you for reading xx
I love derma rolling, I think it definitely improves the skin and I can totally see how it changed yours! 🙂
Do you use it too? Thank you so much darling
I’ve never heard of dermarollers! It sounds like a good option for acne scars, I think it worked pretty well on you! I also have acne scars so I will keep this in mind! Thank you for sharing your exeprience, great post!!!
Thank you for reading, it’s such a great option I hope you’ll try it
Wow looks at those results! I’ve never thought about doing this before but you’re kind of making me want to check it out. Off to Amazon!
Ahahha yeah I hope you’ll love it!
I’ve never heard of this procedure, so thanks for sharing this information. It seems to be working quite well on you.
Thank you for reading x
I’m scared to try this out. I’m really particular about my face so I don’t know if I can actually go through microneedling my face.
It’s less scary than how looks x
I have always been quite curious about Dermarollers and jade rollers. I’ve seen them everywhere from beauty blogs to Amazon. Thank you for the honest insight!
Awesome information! I have this tool to use for stretch mask. I got the first one done professionally as they have the longer needles then after I do it myself at home. It’s amazing.
It’s amazing is it? I want to try the professional one too, is it painful?
I have a high pain tolerance but I did feel it.. it wasn’t too bad for me. I’ve done epilators and lasers so I can handle stuff more than most people. So I guess the answer is it depends..
I’d like to do both to be honest, I have two tattoos not sure if it counts as that kind of pain ? the roller at home didn’t hurt at all after the first time
Rolling tiny needles on your face sounds a little scary but it’s reassuring that you say that the pain is bearable. It seems to be working great!
It’s really not that painful x
Kind of scary to try but hoping to see more testimonials though as its something new
This sounds nice and I like the product and it’s use. Just scared of the pain beautiful but staying beautiful comes with pain.
I have got it done by doctors. Didn’t know we can do it ourselves. And it was so costly. Thank you so much . I will ask them.
You can totally do it at home, you just have to use smaller needles x
I’ve never heard about this Microneedling before but it looks so effective I really need this one for my face so cool!
It’s a very effective technique, I hope you’ll try it 🙂
I learned about microneedling many years ago when it was very expensive and only done by trained dermatologists or licensed skin care therapists. I scar very easily and wondered if it would work on my skin type.
I hope I cleared your thoughts x
I have been looking into microneedling for a few years but havent done it yet. Maybe soon!
I hope this post helped you make a decision x
I read a lot about this, and I think this is really helpful and the outcome will be realy beautiful
I have heard a lot about this process and I am thinking to try it. I like the fact that it is not painful.
It makes it easier to try when the pain is not that crazy 🙂
A great treatment option in atrophic acne scars and for skin rejuvenation
It’s awesome
Never heard of this but it obviously works. Thanks for bringing this treatment to my awareness. Have one or 2 friends I plan to on sharing this with.
