Hi Darlings, in today’s post we are going to talk about the Best Foundations for Combination Skin.
The other day a girl DMed me on Instagram asking me for foundations recommendations since she had a skin type similar to mine.
After answering her, I started thinking that I could make it a series here and share my top favourites in each category so you have something to refer to if you need a new foundation, eyeshadow or whatever.
Are you ready to find you my favourite foundations for combination skin?
Do you have combination skin?
In my experience, I discovered that apart from some exceptions, most people have some version of combination skin.
- Does your skin get oily through the day but you don’t have severe acne? You have combination skin.
- Do you have dry areas on your face where the skin feels tight? You have combination skin.
And honestly, even if you have oilier or drier skin than me, you can still use these foundations, you just have to use either a mattifying or a hydrating primer depending on your issue and they will work just fine.
Of course, no foundation will look good if you don’t have good skin. That doesn’t mean you don’t have imperfections because everybody has them but it means that you have to have at least a hydrated base.
So everything starts from skincare first, I’ll leave you with my skincare routines so you can see what I use to keep my skin balanced and as smooth as possible.
Do we like the same foundation?
Now that you know if you have combination skin, we need to find out if we like the same foundations. My ideal foundation has:
- Light to Medium Coverage
I tend to like more sheer/breathable foundations that even out my complexion instead of heavy ones.
- Buildable
Even if I like light foundations I have some areas where I want more coverage so my perfect foundation has to be buildable without cracking or getting patchy.
- Natural Finish
My ideal foundation isn’t too matte or too glowy, natural finish means that it looks like skin.
- Long-Lasting
I don’t want a foundation that slips and slide through the day. I need something that will stay without rubbing on clothes/hands too much.
My Top 5 Foundations for Combination Skin
Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua

- Price: 50$
- Shade I use: B20
- Shade Range: 17 Shades available
- SPF: 15
- Coverage: Light-Medium, buildable
- Consistency: Watery, It needs to be shaken well.
- Finish: Natural
- Lasting Power: 8 hours, 3 before needing to blot.
- Scent: Fresh and luxe (to me it smells like a fancy version of Nivea)
- Application: I dot it on my face using my fingers and then I blend it with a damp sponge
My Experience: I started using this foundation when I was 17, I used to have to save for weeks to get it but it was totally worth it. I recently picked it up again and I remembered why I love it so much. It looks amazing on the skin. It looks natural and it evens out the complexion beautifully. The shade matches me perfectly. Side note: I started using it when my skin was very oily and had a lot of blemishes and I still loved it, so you can use it even if you are oily, you just need a good mattifying powder.
Chanel Le Teint Ultra Velvet

- Price: 50$
- Shade I use: B20
- Shade Range: 13 Shades available
- SPF: 15
- Coverage: Light-Medium, buildable
- Consistency: Watery, it needs to be shaken well.
- Finish: Natural – Matte
- Lasting Power: 8 hours, 5 before needing to blot.
- Scent: Green Apple
- Application: I dot it on my face using my fingers and then I blend it with a damp sponge
My Experience: This is the new release from the brand. To me is a velvet version of the Vitalumiere Aqua, which makes it perfect for Summer or if you tend to get oilier through the day. It is what I’d have used at 17 in place of the Vitalumiere if I’d have existed. So it’s really a matter of what you prefer, I honestly love and have both. Again the shade is a perfect match.
L’Oréal Infaillible 24HR Fresh Wear Foundation

- Price: 14,99$
- Shade I use: 135 Vanilla
- Shade Range: 40 Shades available
- SPF: 25
- Coverage: Medium, buildable
- Consistency: Thin, runny, it needs to be shaken.
- Finish: Satiny matt
- Lasting Power: 8 hours without blotting
- Scent: Fresh
- Application: I dot it on my face using my fingers and then I blend it with a damp sponge or a stippling brush.
- Review: Here you can see a detailed review
My Experience: This foundation has a cult behind and for good reasons. It’s heavier than what I usually choose but it still looks incredibly natural. It makes the skin look poreless and smooth. It lasts all day without looking cakey or powdery. It’s the foundation I use when I need my makeup to LAST. The shade range is amazing and the price is competitive. One of the best foundations out there, in my opinion.
Bali Body BB Cream

- Price: $29.95
- Shade I use: Natural
- Shade Range: 4 Shades available
- SPF: 15
- Coverage: Light-Medium
- Consistency: Moussy
- Finish: Natural
- Lasting Power: 10 hours, 6 without blotting
- Scent: It doesn’t really have a scent.
- Application: I dot it on my face using my fingers and then I blend it with a damp sponge.
- Review: Here you can see a detailed review
My Experience: I did a sponsored post using this BB Cream a year ago (this is not sponsored by the way) but I still use it. It really shows how much I actually love it. Again another natural-looking product. This BB Cream is insanely long lasting on the skin and it looks beautiful on. It’s perfect for lighter makeup days and summertime. The only thing is the shade range kind of sucks. Natural matches me quite well but four shades aren’t enough.
Guerlain Lingerie De Peau Aqua Nude

- Price: $49
- Shade I use: 2N Clair
- Shade Range: 9 Shades available
- SPF: 20
- Coverage: Medium, buildable
- Consistency: Watery, it needs to be shaken well.
- Finish: Natural
- Lasting Power: 8 hours, 5 before needing to blot.
- Scent: Violet
- Application: I dot it on my face using my fingers and then I blend it with a damp sponge or a stippling brush
My Experience: This is the foundation that’s currently in my makeup bag and what I use every day, as you might have seen in my #MakeupMondays. It feels like silk between the fingers, it’s very unique, it’s the kind of foundation I’d recommend to someone who likes the look of BB Creams but wants an actual foundation. The only thing I don’t like is the scent. All Guerlain products have the classic violet scent. I don’t like it, it smells like grandma’s makeup but it doesn’t bother my skin and it doesn’t linger so it’s fine for me.
Final Considerations
As you might have noticed most foundations are high end. It is one of those categories I prefer to splurge because it makes me more comfortable knowing what’s on my skin has some quality and skincare benefits.
Now does it mean you can’t find a good foundation at the drugstore? Absolutely not. The L’Oreal one is a good proof of that. It just means I like my foundations expensive.
But If you don’t want to spend, L’Oreal and Maybelline have amazing options too.
Let me know if you have more questions, I can totally help you to find the perfect foundation for your needs!
And let me know your favourites, I can’t wait to expand my collection too!

I have combination skin too! I would love to try Chanel foundations and also UD Stay Naked and KvD True Portrait. But I only have one face lol Now in summer I use Erborian BB cream and a FaceID BB cream, love them both, Erborian has more coverage. I also use a tinted sunscreen from Madara for no-makeup days. This one doesn’t have any coverage, but evens complexions and gives a nice base for blush/bronzer.
I used to use Dior backstage foundation before summer (now it’s too light, because I’m tanned), but it isn’t my fav: it doesn’t seem to enhance my complexion and the staying power is just a few hours.
I actually really like Dior Backstage but I haven’t picked it up in forever. I’ve heard amazing things about the Erborian BB Cream but I’ve never tried it. Both Stay Naked and KVD have to much coverage for my taste but I know a lot of people love them!
Good to know! Stay Naked and KVD are marketed as medium coverage. It’s hard to find foundations both sheer and matte or at least not too glowy with a good staying power.
The second Chanel one is like that (the one with black packaging) and it’s the only foundation I know it’s both. The unicorn of foundations hahah
Anche quello della Maybellibe è notevole e non si ossida 😘
Quale dici?
I love that they each one has SPF added in. That’s so important! I would love to try the Loreal one.
It’s amazing!
I like how you’ve accounted for different skin types and preferences!
Thank you 💕
That BB Cream looks great, and I love the price on it 🙂 I’m with you: I will spend a bit more on foundation and face cream than other products.
You’ll love the bb cream!
These are all great options. Great good quality products. I prefer the ones with SPF so Loreal would be my choice. Thank you for sharing this info.
They all have spf but loreal is amazing!
I have combination skin and I want to try the Loreal foundation. I always hear good review about it, then I never buy it. I walk by it all the time in the drugstore and never give it a thought.
