Hi Darlings, today’s post is going to be the review of the Essence You Better Work Eye Primer.
I know eyeshadow primer is not the most exciting product to talk about but, when it comes to it, I also know how hard it is to find a more affordable
This primer is part of a new line from the brand that is supposed to be gym-proof and waterproof, I’ve also got the mascara and the tinted moisturizer that I’ve recently reviewed.
In case you don’t know, an eyeshadow primer is a base you put before eyeshadow to prime the lid and make whatever powder you apply on top more vibrant and more long-lasting.
You can get Essence from Ulta but this product is not out in the States yet, this site ships worldwide and it costs about 4$.
PACKAGING
It is a classic squeezy tube, you have all the details on the back.
FORMULA
The formula is completely sheer once it’s blended out.
As soon as you put it on it’s quite sticky so you have to set it with a translucent otherwise the shadow will crease and be patchy.
You also have to have a completely dry eyelid before you apply it or it’ll get patchy.
I guess what I’m saying is that this is a product that needs some precautions or it can go south quickly.
LASTING POWER
I have extremely oily eyelids so any test to go through extreme conditions (pretty much the only thing that works for me is the Nars one. Not even the Urban Decay primer potion does a good job and that’s a universal favourite).
With this primer eyeshadow creases after 3 hours which of course is terrible in my opinion especially for a product that is allegedly gym-proof/waterproof.
RATINGS:
- Longevity: 4/10
- Application: 7/10
- Texture: 7/10
- Packaging: 9/10
GRADE: C-
This product is a disaster for me. The main issue I have is the lasting power, which is terrible, therefore, the extra work I have to put in to make it work is not worth it. Now I know I have tricky eyelids so if yours are normal and you are on a tight budget you can make it work but I wouldn’t recommend it, especially if you are looking for longevity.

It doesn’t sound like a great option. Sometimes saving money isn’t the best choice.
Agree! I can’t seam to find a good affordable primer 🙁
This sounds like just too much work for an eye primer. While this may work for some I personally just use concealer as an eye primer since it helps the colors stay on longer without any patchiness. I recommend using either tarte shapetape or any of the maybelline or colourpop concealers. Great post by the way!
Thank you so much for reading, sadly concealer doesn’t work at all for me, I need primer and I was hoping this would be a good affordable option, I’m so sad it didn’t work.
Too bad this product didn’t work out well!! I actually never use an eyeshadow primer, only concealer and that does wonders to my eyeshadow’s longevity!
You are so lucky! Concealer does absolutely nothing for me as primer XD
Aww, too bad this product isn’t long-wearing. This probably won’t work for me either, especially now that it’s summer here and I tend to sweat a lot more during this time of the year.
Exactly, at least now we know we have to avoid it!
Good to know if I ever come across it…thanks for sharing.
You are so welcome
I love the color palette. I am not sure if my wife uses this brand, I will check with her. Thanks a lot for the recos.
Too bad it didn’t work for you. And that seems a lot of work for a primer.
Yeah totally not worth it x
Very honest review. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you for reading! x
Reading through I realize that this may actually work for me because I don’t have oily skin at all. Perhaps it just wasn’t the right fit which is really sad.
I’d love to know what you think, as I said my lids are a bit extreme and there aren’t many primers that work for me. X
This one seems like it would be quite a bit of work. Not sure if it is the way I’d go but thank you so much for the insight!
Thank you for reading x
Oh I am glad I read this because I was thinking I might try it. But it seems like maybe this one isn’t a great choice :/
Nope, you better skip this one ?
Thanks for the very honest review. I don’t use primers but I think this would work for me since my skin is not so oily.
It might work for you, but if you never used it you shouldn’t start now ?
I have never used a primer and I am wondering how much of a difference it really makes. I have some samples at home but am never sure when is the right time to try them out.
It makes your eyeshadow look brighter and last longer, if you don’t have really oily lids you can use concealer though ?
I’ve always used Urban Decay’s primer because…well, Urban Decay is amazing! My makeup exploration goes as far as being subscribed to Birchbox for samples of stuff to try. That’s about it. I usually keep with tried and true brands when spending my money on stuff. :/
Well urban decay primer is amazing I agree x
Too bad it doesn’t have a lasting effect. It would be perfect if it does.. ?
Totally x
Have you tried the wnw photofocus primer? I have the oiliest lids, and it works like a charm for me.
I’ve never tried it actually, I’ll have to check, it would be nice to save a some money. I love the NARS one but man, it’s so expensive
